Dishwashers are an essential appliance required in every household. The working mechanism of a dishwasher is to spray detergent water on the dishes, spray them with water and make them squeaky clean. For this several parts of the dishwasher work together to yield clean dishes. One such important component installed along with the dishwasher is the air gap.
This part functions as an obstruction for the dirty water which flows out of the unit and keeps it out so that it does not get mixed with the clean water inside the dishwasher. However at times, this important part may get dysfunctional due to several reasons, like if food remnants get clogged in it, or a rupture which can cause leakage.
At times you may also experience the problem of soiled water overflowing from the dishwasher air gap. In case the dishwasher air gap is leaking, it needs to be replaced lest it creates major problems in the appliance.

Instructions for Installing Dishwasher Air Gap

As mentioned earlier, an air gap is device which keeps out the unclean water from getting siphoned back into the dishwasher again. The dirty water from the dishwasher gets drained, through the air gap into the sewage system. So to avoid the mixing of water it is necessary to get an air gap installed.
Here are a few instructions on how to install an air gap for the dishwasher.

▶ The air gap may come in various sizes depending on the capacity of the dishwasher, so purchase this device according to your requirement from any hardware store. Before you install the air gap and connect it to the dishwasher, remember to turn off the mains and other connections.
▶ Measure dimensions of the air gap and drill a hole on the countertop, exactly above the dishwasher. If you have a laminate or a tiles countertop, then you will have to use a ceramic drill to bore the hole into it. In case of a wooden countertop, cut through the underlay with the help of a spade bit.
▶ Now place the container of the air gap in the hole and place the nut provided with the kit into it. Turn the nut in clockwise direction to fix in the hole. A few threads on the nut may be visible. Take a wrench and tighten the nut from the underside of the air gap to lodge it securely in the unit.
▶ The next task is to concentrate on the hose that attaches the dishwasher to the air gap for draining the dirty water. Turn the dishwasher in such a way that you are able to access its backside. You will notice an outlet where the hose has to be inserted. With the compression clamp, tighten one end of the hose to the dishwasher unit.
▶ The other free end of the hose should be attached to the inlet of the air gap. Using a screwdriver fasten the clamp of the pipe in place. The outlet should be connected to the sink drain so that the water flows without any problems and gets drained directly into the sewage system.
▶ Make sure that you have installed all the parts correctly. After you have completed the installation process, push the dishwasher back in place. Now with the help of the retention brackets secure the dishwasher in its place. Reconnect all the wires and check if the air gap is functioning properly.
In case you encounter any dishwasher problem, then try to address it yourself or get in touch with the technician, who will repair it for you.
