Drain flies, or moth flies, are dark-colored flies found in the drains. Although a single fly is harmless, these flies can be a nuisance when in large numbers. The larvae of the drain flies develop in the black, thick, and viscous slime present in the drains. They are also found in garbage, compost bins, sewers, and septic tanks.
How to Get Rid of Drain Flies
Identifying the source of the breeding is very important before you carry out any drain flies extermination methods. The easiest method is sticking tape to drains to see whether flies are present. You can have a small hole in it for air to pass. Once you find the source of breeding of the flies, you can adopt the following methods for their removal.
Cleaning drains is the first and the foremost thing that needs to be done. As mentioned above, drain flies breed in the slime and dirt in the drains, therefore, it is essential to the clean up the drain in order to prevent their breeding. You can use a pipe brush or plumbing snake to clean up the drains and pipes.
If you find drain flies in the bathroom, you need to re-grout the tiles. Grouting the tiles again will help in removing any moisture in the tiles. This will help in getting rid of the flies. You can even spray aerosol insecticides in bathroom drains.
You can use cleaning products like drain gel to clean the pipes, as it may not be possible to clean everything with the brush and plumbing snake. But the drain must be cleaned with a brush prior to pouring drain gel in it. Caustic drain cleaners are also used by some people, but they tend to damage the pipes.
Pouring hot water in the drains can also help in drain flies removal. Hot water helps in destroying the eggs of the flies as well as cleaning the slime and dirt in the pipes and drains. You can even spray it using a spray bottle so that it can reach all the parts of the pipes.
Pheromones are substances excreted by certain insects, and hence, these traps are widely used for pest control, specially for capturing drain flies. These traps contain chemicals like pheromones that lure insects into the traps. Pheromone traps are specially used in restaurants, dining areas, or in storage cells.
