A warm day brings along with it the fresh smell of fruits and vegetables. But, it also causes the fresh fruits and vegetables to ripen quickly. Thus, the fresh smell turns rotten, an inviting aroma for the nasty fruit flies. You can try the fly swatter or various insect sprays, but these persistent flies will keep coming back in swarms of hundreds. You have a wide option of many simple and natural ways to get rid of fruit flies at home, and this article will discuss the method of getting rid of fruit flies with vinegar.

Material Required:
  • 1 or 2 liter empty soda bottle
  • Sharp knife or scissors
  • Sugar
  • Water (enough to fill the bottle half full)
  • Apple cider vinegar
Method:

Rinse the soda bottle and, using the knife or scissors, (knife is a better option) cut off the bottle about 2 inches from the top. Make sure that you do not cut it too deep. Now, fill it with ½ cup apple cider vinegar. Add ½ cup sugar and water to half fill the bottle. If you fill the bottle with too much water, the fruit flies will be able to make an escape. Now, place the cut portion of the bottle on the top in an inverted position. The narrow part of the opening should be inside the bottle. You can secure the little piece with duct tape so that it does not fall off. Your home-made fruit fly trap is ready.

Place the bottle in an area that is swarming with fruit flies. These pests have a sweet tooth and won't be able to resist the sweetness of the apple cider vinegar and sugar. They will enter the bottle though the narrow opening and won't be able to find their way out. Once inside, their weakness for sweetness will surely spell a death knell for them. This is one of the most effective ways of getting rid of these insects in kitchen.

Fruit flies are attracted to anything that is rotten, be it food particles, bread crumbs, ripened fruits, vegetables, sink drains, garbage bins, etc. When getting rid of these insects with vinegar, you can even add a few drops of liquid soap to the water. The soap will break the surface tension of vinegar and cause the flies to drown instantly. This is a very effective, non-toxic, cheap, and easy way of getting rid of these pests around the house. Once you try this method, you will find the number of flies pestering you decreasing in just a few hours. Thus, this home remedy for getting rid of fruit flies naturally will help you find some much-needed peace of mind.
