Artificial plants and flowers have always been popular for interior decoration. When compared to live plants, artificial ones require very little care and maintenance. Apart from that, you can get artificial ones in a wide range of colors, types, and materials.
However, these plants too attract dust and grime, that can settle on them, if they are not cleaned regularly. While artificial plants made with plastic and certain types of cloth can be cleaned with water, such cleaning may not be possible in case of silk. Cleaning silk plants can be a worrisome task, but is not impossible.

Tips to Clean Silk Plants

As mentioned earlier, silk plants require extra care, so as to prevent getting dirty. You have to dust these plants regularly, for retaining that glossy appearance. However, with time, dust particles can stick to silk, making it dull-looking. Otherwise too, lack of regular dusting can lead to dirty plants. Such conditions warrant proper cleaning.
▶ One of the easy methods is to use store-bought silk plant cleaners. These products have to be sprayed on the plants, so as to dissolve the dust and grime. But in some cases, it has been observed that some of these products seal in the dust. So go for good quality products.
▶ Regular dusting with a feather duster is beneficial for removing dust from silk plants. It is said that lamb wool duster can remove dust more effectively, as the wool contains lanolin.
▶ Even salt can be used for removing dust from silk plants. You just need to take a large paper bag and put a cup of coarse salt in it, along with the silk plant. Now shake the paper bag rigorously. Take out the plant and shake it, so as to remove the salt particles attached to it. The dust particles will get attached to the salt granules and get removed.
▶ Another method is to wipe the plant with a soft, damp cloth. If the material is labeled as water-resistant, then you can wipe it without any hesitation. Otherwise, test whether the water is causing any stains on the material. This can be done by wiping an inconspicuous spot.
▶ Wash the silk plant, If it is labeled as water resistant. Gently spray water onto the plant, and wipe with a soft, dry cloth. You may also dry the plant on sunlight.
▶ If the silk plant has sustained any tough stains on it, then scrub the stains with a toothbrush, after dabbing with a small amount of vinegar or dish washing liquid. You may also resort to dry cleaning for removing stains.
▶ A hair dryer can be used to blow off the dust from silk plants. Another method is to use a vacuum cleaner for this purpose. In such cases, make sure to cover the outlet of the blower with a very thin piece of cloth and secure it with a rubber band, before the cleaning task.
These were some of the common methods employed for cleaning silk plants. However, if the manufacturer has provided any specific instructions regarding cleaning, you have to follow them. Seek professional help if the silk plant is very expensive. You can prevent these plants from getting dull and dirty with regular maintenance, including dusting and wiping.
