If there is one cost-effective home remedy for different household cleaning purposes, it is hydrogen peroxide. Those who are aware of its various uses, are also aware of the savings that go behind it. Starting right from getting rid of stains on clothes, to brushing teeth, this weak, nearly colorless acid (denoted by the chemical formula H2o2) comes in handy all the time. Discovered in the year 1818, this acid is composed of water and oxygen. It is a clear liquid, holding a slightly higher viscosity than water. At home, it serves as an inexpensive but important disinfectant and antiseptic.
What Can You Clean With Hydrogen Peroxide?
  • Perhaps, the most common application, hydrogen peroxide is popular for, is associated with laundry. All you have to do is pour a cup of the acid into the washer load. You won't come across any method to whiten your clothes that is better than this.
  • Most people wonder how to clean ear with hydrogen peroxide. Well, it is easy. Simply pour the acid in a small container with a dropper. Tilt your head to the side so that it is parallel with the ground. Now, squirt three or four drops into the ear. You would feel a kind of jolt or discomfort in your eardrum. Be in the same position for about 10-15 minutes, and let the acid do its work in cleaning the earwax. Thereafter, tilt your head to the other side and ensure that you have a towel or something to catch the liquid. Repeat the same with the other ear.
  • What about brushing your teeth using hydrogen peroxide? This is even easier. For this, you would require a teaspoon of 3% strength of the acid. Simply rinse the bristles of the toothbrush with it, and brush your teeth, concentrating more on the areas that contain plaque or tartar. Thereafter, spit out the liquid and rinse your mouth thoroughly and repeatedly with cool water. Never swallow the acid.
  • You can also use the solution as an inexpensive mouthwash. For five to ten minutes every day, simply swish your mouth with 3% strength of the acid. It would not only make your teeth whiter, but would also kill harmful germs.
  • The use of hydrogen peroxide does not stop here. It is also known to be a useful agent in gardening. Make a mix of the acid (1 oz.) and water (1 cup) and fill it in a spray bottle. Now simply spray it on your houseplants. It won't take long for you to notice your houseplants to have become greener and lusher.
  • If you are prone to fingernail or toenail fungus, then hydrogen peroxide comes to you as a cosmetic gift. Just treat your nails with a mix of water and the acid (50/50), by soaking them in it for 10 minutes daily. Stick to 3% strength.
  • Another tip is not about cleaning, but about purifying water using hydrogen peroxide. As it is an oxidizing agent, it disinfects the water off its contaminants.
  • The acid also gives you the freedom of making a sanitizer at home. Mix the acid with water (50/50) and store it in a spray bottle. Whenever required, just spray the solution onto the kitchen counter tops, taps, sinks, bathroom tiles, shower, etc.
  • One smart way to clean the interior of a humidifier or steamers is to mix a pint of the acid (3% strength) and a gallon of water. Pour the solution into these appliances and switch on the power.
To conclude with one last tip on cleaning with hydrogen peroxide, keeping computer's keyboard and the mouse clean and sanitized is also a part of personal hygiene. So what you can do is, just soak a cotton ball in the acid of strength as mentioned in the above steps, and run through the keys and the mouse. Ensure to squeeze out the excess liquid before cleaning the stuffs.
