Are you planning to buy an extra bed for your home? Why not make a fold-away Murphy bed using a Murphy bed hardware kit? Read on to know more about such hardware kits.
Have you been postponing your plans of buying an extra bed for your home because of a lack of floor space? If yes, then the space-saving Murphy beds are surely the best option for you.
It was William Lawrence Murphy who came up with the idea of fold-down bed mechanism in the year 1900. He also applied for a patent in the early years of the twentieth century. In 1918, he invented a fold-down bed that pivoted on the door jamb and folded into a closet.
This was certainly a great design that allowed the home owners living in small-sized homes to make the most of the limited space. It allowed them to create room for family or guests. If you have a fold-away bed installed in your home, you can make use of the extra bed when guests come over for a sleepover.
You can fold the bed back into the closet in the morning. Thus, you can make use of the floor space for other purposes during the day. If you are living in a small apartment, you can make use of a Murphy bed hardware kit for making such a bed on your own.

Fold-down Mechanism

The fold-away bed consists of a mattress that is fitted into a bed frame. An elastic bed strap holds the mattress in place. The frame and mattress is pivoted at one end so that it can be stored vertically against the wall.
The hardware supports the frame and the mattress and helps in folding down or lifting the bed for opening it or tucking it back into a closet that is attached to the wall. When the concept of fold away beds was visualized by William Murphy, the idea was to simply fold and store the bed in a closet when not in use.
With time, the world of interior design and woodworking has evolved. Nowadays manufacturers have come up with different types of bed plans that use ornate cabinetry. Even the hardware or the spring-lift or piston-lift mechanism used for lifting or lowering the bed is more sophisticated.
The modern fold-away beds are stylish. Unlike the traditional wall-mounted beds that are folded away into a simple closet when not in use, ornate cabinetry is often built on the side of the unit so as to create an armoire design. You can also check out the sliding bed, roof beds and twirl beds.
You can even install these beds on your own. Well, all you need is good woodworking skills and a hardware kit. You can use your woodworking skills to build and customize the cabinetry as per your choice and use the hardware provided in the kit to hinge the bed to the wall.

Hardware Kits

If you are keen on getting a fold-away bed for your home, you should go to the home store and look for a bed plan and a hardware kit. You will also need a bed frame and a mattress. You can find kits for twin, full, queen and king size.
You also need to decide whether you want the bed to be mounted vertically or horizontally. If you wish to install a vertical mounted bed, make sure that you buy a vertical mount hardware kit. The horizontal beds work well for homes that have a low ceiling.
Also work on the other details such as the location of the bed, the size of the mattress and cabinetry. Nowadays, panel beds enclosed in ornate cabinetry are very popular. Create-a-Bed, Rockler Woodworking and Moddi offer kits that contain cut sheets, mounting hardware along with the list of materials that are needed for building the bed.
The hardware kits will have steel or aluminum frames, screws, bolts, springs, brackets and all the things that are required for hinging the bed to the wall. The parts are already pre-drilled and can be assembled with the help of instructions given in the instruction manual or an instructional DVD.
If you are not really keen on installing the bed on your own, you can also check out the pre-assembled beds or order a customized bed for your home.
If you are living in a small apartment, you can set aside your worries about the limited floor space by installing a Murphy bed. Once you install a fold-away bed, you wouldn't have to worry when guests come for a night stay. Since the bed can be tucked away in a closet when not needed, you can use the floor space as you deem fit. Isn't that great!
