Summer is indeed a great season to enjoy the warm weather outdoors. However, indoors, it can quickly become an extremely uncomfortable season to deal with. Summer also means extra work for your air conditioning system and a hefty electricity bill for you. Oftentimes, your whole house air conditioner works unnecessarily and cools rooms that are unoccupied. In that case, a ventless portable air conditioner can come to your rescue.
Working
It is a small unit which comes with an exhaust pipe. You do not have to install anything on the exterior of your house as there are no vents. Place the system by the window and put the pipe outside. It works by drawing in the warm air in the room and sending it to the cooling unit which is built inside the air conditioner. The cool air from the unit is then given back to the room. Due to the heat exchange that takes place during the cooling process, warm air is generated by the unit.
In a conventional air conditioner, this air is vented out by the means of vents. However, in a ventless air conditioner, this air is exhausted through the pipe. They are equipped with a thermostat to adjust the temperature according to the weather. It also has a timer so that you can program its ON and OFF time. They also come in a variety of colors and designs, so that you can match them with the interiors of your home.
Advantages
There are several advantages of ventless air conditioners. As the name suggests, these home appliances are portable, hence their mobility is their best feature. You can simply carry this unit anywhere in your house. The only requirement is that the room should have a window to put the exhaust pipe out. Moreover, you are relieved of the hassles that come with installing a vented air conditioner. Whole house air conditioning systems are ideal when you have several rooms in your house inhabited by people at all times.
However, if you only have two people in the house, who usually stay in the same room, then your investment in a whole house air conditioner would be a waste. In that case, a portable room air conditioners can suit your needs the best. For instance, in the evening you can place it in a living room where the occupants are watching TV, while the same can be later shifted in a bedroom when the occupants go to bed. This will enable you to save on power and cut your electricity bills. Running air conditioners round the clock is not desirable from the environment point of view as well. Thus, ventless portable air conditioners offer an economical and environment-friendly option of cooling your homes.
Disadvantages
There are certainly some drawbacks involved in using this type. They are inefficient when compared with the vented window units. Since, window units work by exchanging the internal and external air, they work rather faster than portable units. Another problem with ventless units is that since it keeps on drawing air from the room itself, it leads to several ventilation problems in the house as the air simply keeps on circulating from room to room.
Ventless air conditioners also need a window, hence are not useful for cooling enclosed spaces. Also this window has to be kept open whenever you run the system. This may lead to many security and privacy issues. Hence, do not let the mobility and cost of a ventless portable air conditioner let you fall for it. Assess your requirements and only then decide on buying an air conditioner.
Thus, ventless portable air conditioners are ideal if you have few occupants and more rooms. They are also cost-effective and efficient if you only need occasional cooling of your home. In other cases, you would rather stick to conventional air conditioning systems.
