Pumice stone is a must-have household item, useful for feet care and all types of cleaning purposes. Be it skin exfoliation, pedicure, or getting rid of tough toilet stains, this stone comes to the rescue. The highly porous nature, abrasive surface, lightweight, and low hardness of pumice stone makes it an excellent item with multiple uses. It is also used for scrubbing the discolored areas and for cleaning powdery mildews and molds from old walls.
If you use pumice stone for scrubbing your feet or for cleaning the toilet on a regular basis, you might have noticed soap and detergent substances deposited in its pores or voids. This can hamper the effectiveness of the stone during its future use. A practical solution for restoring its porous nature is to clean it. Take a look at the following methods to do the same effectively.
Simple Brushing: This is the simplest way of cleaning the pumice. Scrub over the pores using a regular cleaning brush to dislodge the particles. Use this method when the stone is dry.
Using Warm Water: After using the pumice for cleaning, hold it under warm running water, and rinse it thoroughly. You can use an old toothbrush to clean the stubborn deposits. Allow it to dry after the process.
Laundry Cleaning: This method is simple and quite effective. Wash the stone in a washing machine after placing it in a thick sock or a pillow case. Add detergent in the usual amount used for cleaning clothes and run the machine for one cycle. You can also wash it in a dishwasher.
Cleaning with Soap: Fill a small bucket with hot water, add washing soap to it, and stir to create the soap solution. Soak the pumice stone in the solution for 10-15 minutes. The hot water and soap will loosen the dirt from the voids. Lightly brush the stone later to clean it sufficiently. Do not forget to let it dry before using it again.
Using Bleach: Take some water in a small pot, bring it to a boil, and add 2-3 tablespoons of bleach to it. Place the pumice stone in the pot (must get completely submerged) and boil the water for another 7-8 minutes.
You can find great varieties of pumice stone in terms of color and size at a low price. This is the main reason why we prefer buying a new stone instead of cleaning and reusing the old one. With all these cleaning methods at hand, it is easier to reuse the current piece.
