As a DIY novice, taking on complex woodworking projects may seem intimidating at first. There are plenty of simple ideas that can give you an introduction without leaving you feeling overwhelmed.
Stop porch pirates from stealing your packages with this straightforward DIY. Requiring only minimal tools, it can be completed over one weekend.
1. Reupholster a Footstool
Upholstered footstools can be an indispensable addition to any home. Not only can they add additional seating, they provide a place for you to prop your feet up or even be used as makeshift tables! Reupholstering one is also an ideal opportunity to practice upholstery skills and add instant style and refreshment to any living space.
Use fabric that complements your decor to cover your footstool. Adding piping will elevate the look even further; simply zigzagging a piece of piping cord across the fabric edges is all it takes!
Nail-head trim is an elegant finishing touch for any home decor style, easily adding elegance to any footstool or bench. Easy and straightforward to add, nail heads can transform it from basic to elegant in an instant – use sparingly so as not to overdo it! Decorative buttons can also elevate the look and add charm; these can be purchased at any haberdashery store.
2. Make a Curtain
Curtains are an easy DIY project that can add a personalized touch to your home and test out your sewing skills. Plus, curtains provide additional light blocking and privacy in your living space.
To create curtains, first lay out your fabric and mark its desired length with chalk or fabric marking pencil. After cutting with fabric scissors or rotary cutter and mat, measure and mark lining fabric using these same measurements, subtracting 10 inches because you won’t be needing to hem this piece (Diagram A).
Once both pieces of fabric have been cut, pin down their side hems with straight pins. Fold each bottom edge of each lining panel under three inches with wrong side inward and press. Blind-hem stitch the lining panels to each curtain panel using a 1/2″ stitch length (Diagram B). Do this step for each panel of your curtain.
3. Make a Headboard
DIY headboard projects may seem complex at first, but this DIY headboard project is still highly doable. First, create two 36×48-inch frames from canvas stretchers and mount them side by side. Once mounted, cut two pieces of off-white linen that fit the backs of each frame to use for sketching half your headboard design on each. When pulled tautly over staples on frames and stapled securely to frames you can use a broom or vacuum cleaner to clean away any leftover paint residue from frames.
With easy-to-find materials and minimal woodworking experience, this budget-friendly DIY project adds modern charm to any room. Simply start with a piece of plywood, mark out the desired curves using pencil, and cut using either a jigsaw or router for smooth edges.
Vinyl flashing may not often find itself inside the home, but this unique headboard proves otherwise. Simply map out a design using masking tape before coating all areas in your bedroom’s background color before peeling back the tape to reveal your masterpiece!
4. Paint a Wall
Painting walls is an enjoyable DIY project that provides immediate gratification, not to mention being a powerful confidence booster.
Even during a coronavirus pandemic, people may not have the time or resources available to them for projects like learning to drywall or repaving a patio; there are plenty of DIY projects that can transform your home without needing extensive construction skills or spending a large sum of money.
As soon as you’re ready to undertake your DIY paint project, start by clearing away furniture and other items you don’t want painted over from the work area. Next, cover furniture with plastic drop cloth or sheets as additional protection from accidental spills.
Create an eye-catching wall in any room by giving it a striped paint effect with wide decorator’s tape in stripes on your walls, leaving an equal distance between each stripe. After applying color (in this instance, navy), remove the tape to reveal an elegant and unique striped wall!
